What does a reading speed test measure?

This free reading speed test with comprehension calculates words per minute from a natural passage and checks meaning with three short questions. It is not a diagnosis, certificate or permanent ability score; it is a starting point for comparisons made under similar conditions.

How is words per minute calculated?

The number of words in the passage is divided by reading time in minutes. A 300-word passage completed in two minutes therefore gives a raw pace of 150 words per minute.

Why should the result include comprehension?

A higher raw pace is not more effective when answer accuracy falls. The measured reading flow reports pace, comprehension and effective reading speed together.

Is average reading speed one fixed target?

No. Age, language experience, text type and reading purpose can change the result. Treat published averages as context, not as a proficiency threshold, and compare your own similar rounds.
