What is effective reading speed, and how do you calculate it?
One view of two outcomes
Effective reading speed multiplies raw WPM by the comprehension proportion. At 240 WPM with 75% accuracy, the result is 180 effective WPM. It is a simple product metric designed to keep pace and measured understanding in the same conversation.
For example, 280 WPM at 50% gives 140, while 210 WPM at 90% gives 189. The second attempt looks slower in isolation but is more balanced for the questions that were asked.
It is not an official standard
The formula is not a universally accepted clinical scale. Three easy multiple-choice questions and ten difficult inference questions do not provide equal reliability. Guessing, prior knowledge and question design also affect the percentage.
Use the metric as a directional signal within your own timeline. Retaining raw WPM, answer count, text type and date gives a more transparent record than a single combined score.
